The IRS’ Online Account system provides taxpayers who have registered accounts not only with the ability to make payments online, but also to view their tax balance details by year, payment history as well as scheduled or pending payments, copies of tax notices, and other additional information. As of this year, your tax services professional is also able to request digital authorization to engage and interact with the IRS on your behalf.
To register for the IRS’ Online Account system, you will need to verify your identity, which generally takes approximately 15 minutes. When completing the registration process, please have the following information ready:
Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)
Tax filing status and mailing address
One financial account number linked to your name:
Credit card – last 8 digits (no American Express, debit or corporate cards) or
Student loan or
Mortgage or home equity loan or
Mobile phone linked to your name (for faster registration) or ability to receive an activation code by US mail.
